Presentation

After ten years of shared artistic and romantic adventures, Virginie Le Flaouter and Vincent Maillot wanted to use the sustaining force that drove their personal and professional lives as the starting point for a new creation. From that desire was born the evocative performance Appuie-toi sur moi [Lean On Me], which speaks of the universal reach of intimacy. Their tandem acrobatics explores the different aspects of support and what these mean in terms of relationships. The necessity, the absence, the perversity of support, its inherent impermanence, without which it becomes a dependence, even perhaps a form of trap...

Staged by their associate Gilles Cailleau (Cie Attention Fragile), this 360-degree performance revolves around a Chinese pole and inspires a certain complicity with the audience. The acrobatics, the choreography, the spoken words, and the music become different media for a voyage in which the barriers between the artists and the audience are apt to disappear. This roofless tent was inspired by the natural craters of Réunion Island and the audience is seated just five meters from the pole in two rows of circular seating.

The Cirquons Flex company was founded in 2007 on Réunion Island following an encounter between Virginie Le Flaouter (École Nationale de Cirque de Montréal) and Vincent Maillot (self-taught artist). They developed their work through a series of artistic residencies and then brought a new form of circus to this French island located in the Indian Ocean. They also began building ties with other countries and territories around the island that were the source of migration to Réunion and made connections with other artistic disciplines to broaden the scope of their own work.

Deeply rooted in the contemporary circus, the duo is working to create a circus that is endemic to Réunion Island, a circus that represents the island as it is today while also integrating traditional practices to both nourish and offset the more urban, global, and modern influences. Constantly seeking new ideas and perspectives, they have created a hybrid form of circus that poetically captures elements of contemporary circus, music, dance, text, and image to better place their work within the curious, insular rhythm of their island world.
