Presentation

Marlène Rubinelli-Giordano is a woman steeped in the performance arts, the movement of the body, the power of the image, and when she takes to the stage she conjures an imaginary frolic that is the foundation of Des Bords de Soi. She creates a common space for the artist and the audience, and raises the poignant questions: "what seeps out of the cracks of our personae?" and "what bridges are needed to traverse that which pours out?" For this opus, she has assembled five circus artists with their own unique specialties — Chinese pole, wire, aerial straps, contortionism, Cyr wheel — to create a finely choreographed on-stage performance that embraces the notion of being overwhelmed and of overflowing.

"To make what is inside of us burst out into the open, is it to become different, dissident, free?" she asks. With her lucid and amused perspective, she invites one and another to identify what is overwhelming for each of us, for all of us. Her inspiration? The discourse of the margins, the people who don't adopt the norms, the eternal attraction of all that is beyond what is expected or imposed, that which comes from the innermost being. There is no end of surprises in store for the audience as they make this crossing with the artists. When the performance overflows itself, when the artists overwhelm the tent, the audience too is offered the opportunity to go beyond all the restrictions placed upon them...

"Powerful images that evoke the Magie Nouvelle movement and even provide a sense of trouble to come. A wander through chimeras, a canvas tsunami, a manic matrix... dream or reality!"
Dordogne Libre

Since 2000, this multidisciplinary collective has used circus, dance, music, and theatre to explore the internal and external frictions of human existence. Ready to absorb the emotions of the surrounding world, the AOC collective is a moving matrix that captures the pulse of our era, a living organism composed of artists that have met either on the stage or in the practice rooms of the Châlons-en-Champagne national circus center. The collective is based in the Aquitaine region in southwest France and since 2012 it has been in residence at L’Agora Pôle the national circus center in Nouvelle Aquitaine. AOC has a carte blanche for its creations and creates performances inspired by spontaneity and originality, all tailored to a singular place or event.

The collective creates works for everybody, particularly those who are traditionally distanced from art, by using immersive and collaborative techniques and by embracing educational projects. AOC work explores the sphere around a major theme: the body as an element of the soul, the equipment as an extension of the flesh, space as a grounds for experimentation, and encounters as the fertile soil for creation. With dreams as substance and reality as experience, this instinctive form of art, both organic and robust, is finally expressed through sensations.
