Presentation

First, there is a drop of water that falls, then footsteps approach. And so it begins! Amid a worrying gurgling of water and eerie whistling, a person appears to be spit out onto the stage. His physique is oddly out of kilter, a mix of Buster Keaton and Pierrot Lunaire and a Pinocchio who grew up too quickly. He seems absurd, tender and naïve, wearing trousers that are too short for him and a most unusual hat. He begins to sweep the stage and that's when he looks up and notices he is being observed... There is no scenery, no artifice, no props! Julien Cottereau knows how to do everything with basically nothing: the character, the story, the emotions, the sounds, the human presence, even the animals... If he needs something, he invents it! His talent for miming and sound effects creates a world of monsters and princesses, a world of tenderness and emotion, a world of simplicity and grace. The imagination is up and running because Julien Cottereau is a virtuoso performer and an enchanting guide.

"When the curtain fell, a small boy began to cry because the show was over. It was difficult to return to earth for the adults as well!" Les Echos

"The spectacular score is revealed to the audience with extreme finesse." Télérama

"Julien Cottereau is following in the miming footsteps of Marceau." Le Figaro

"A must-see!" A Nous Paris

"Alone on stage, he creates marvels, drawing upon the crowds for unwitting accomplices. Chidren or adults, even the most timid, play a part in the game and are transported by the experience." Le Parisien

"In the ethereal world created by Cirque de Soleil for Saltimbanco, there was a odd clown who made me double over in laughter every time he appeared on stage. One day this character escaped to create Image-toi, which was given the Molière award for the revelation of 2007." Le Pariscope

From his first classes at the ENSATT theatre school in Lyon to his performances on stages around the world, Julien Cottereau's biography is overflowing with meetings and experiences of all shapes, sizes, and colors. He learned the fundamentals of circus in classes with Alain Knapp, Pierre Tabard, Aurélien Recoing, and Philippe Gaulier and played the solo clown Eddy in Saltimbanco by Cirque du Soleil. And one can't forget his own creations...

He has also worked in cinema and television, both as a director (the short film Bonjour Adieu) and as an actor under the direction of lsuch luminaries as Erick Zonca (Éternelles, best male actor award at the Festival de Brest, 1994), Solveig Anspach (Back Soon, 2008; Haut-les-coeurs, performance award at the Festival de Gand, 1999), Tonie Marshall, Pierre Jolivet, Bertrand Van Effenterre, Jean-Louis Lorenzi, and Denis Malleval.

He has also written a work of opera-circus, Va donner aux poissons une idée de ce qu’est l’eau, for the Compagnie Off and participated in the staging of the performance.

He has also performed for the theatre, notably under Brigitte Jacques-Wajeman in Le Passage by Véronique Olmi and under Laurence Renn in Les Manuscrits du Déluge by Michel-Marc Bouchard
