A ballet of moving stars, surreal voyages, card tricks, shadow puppets, animate and facetious objects, and other surprises…For this soirée specially imagined by the MuCEM, Raphaël Navarro, guest artist of the 2019 Biennale, invites a wide variety of magicians to create a constellation of performance in order to reveal the richness and diversity of Magie Nouvelle [New Magic]. This is a unique and fully fledged artistic movement that was started by the 14:20 company, which remains one of its primary torchbearers. Live musicians will accompany this soirée, weaving links between the different artists through original creations composed specifically for the event. With the technical emphasis momentarily “forgotten”, this composite show evokes the poetic and the imaginary while featuring surreal and gravity-defying movements.

As an echo of the Soirée Magique, a variety of installations by guest artists will be on display in the Traversée des apparences exhibition at La Friche la Belle de Ma, which runs from 12 January to 27 February 2019.

Biography

Founded in 2000 by Clément Debailleul and Raphaël Navarro, the 14:20 company has produced about twenty shows, performances, and visual installations: Solo S (2003), Vibrations 92009-2011), Notte (2010), Stormy Weather (2013), Nous, rêveurs définitifs [We, Definitive Dreamers] (2016), Wade in the Water (2016), and Faust (2018) at the Comédie Française.

The company runs La Boîte Noire, a laboratory for magical experimentations dedicated to research, innovation, training, and resources at the CNAC (National Center for the Circus Arts). The company has also offered for the professional training courses over the past 12 years.

The 14:20 company oversees courses in new magic at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre (ENSATT) and the École Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette (ESNAM). The company has participated in a variety of diverse collaborations and multidisciplinary encounters with Michel Butor, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Philippe Decouflé, Cirque du Soleil, Laurence Equilbey...

The creators of 14:20 have been associate artists at the Centquatre-Paris since 2012 and are also asssociate artists at the Théâtre du Rond-Point.
