Presentation

With the market in the center of Conakry, Guinea as its inspiration, Boulevard Conakry captures the energy of this unique place. The market is a hive of humanity that is at times completely surreal with sellers shouting, dancing, and singing among their stalls. At times, young artists emerge from nowhere juggling fruit or showing off their acrobatic prowess. It is this life, with all of its subtle colors and aromas, that this performance puts on stage. It is a whirlwind of techniques and disciplines that are as diverse as the wares on sale at the market: acrobatics, aerial dance, balancing, hand-to-hand balancing, Chinese pole, juggling, contortion... And all along the dancing never stops.

It started with Circus Baobab, the first and biggest circus project in Guinea, which was created in 1997 by Pierrot Bidon at the request of Laurent Chevallier and Telivel Diallo, the head of Culture de la Guinée Conakry. In sub-Saharan Africa, there was no company of aerial artists. The word "trapeze" didn't event exist in Soussou, the language of the region that includes Conakry. In his effort to change this, Pierrot found a precious resource in the sense of tribal spirit, a mutual trust that was essential to launch an elite troupe of aerial performers. He also delved into the worlds of traditional dance and music, the basis of the ancestral culture in Guinea. The Circus Baobab was born. Pierrot recruited performers from the ranks of the National Ballet of Guinea and from among the natural born acrobats who performed in the street and at the market.

Ten years after it was founded and with an international tour under its belt, the adventure that was Circus Baobab came to an end. But, the children of that circus quickly realized that it was time to take destiny into their own hands. The bonds of friendship and the passion for the circus were already in place, all that was needed was a structure. That's how Terya Circus came into being. Terya means "friendship" in the Mandingo language and is the basis of the new circus school the group opened in Conakry in 2008 as a way to continue the Pierrot's legacy. The Hibiscus Project thus came into being and serves as both a training center for young artists and the headquarters for the Terya Circus.

Pierrot Bidon left us in 2010, but it is certain he would have been proud to see that the young artists he believed in long ago are today at the head of a circus school and a company in Guinea. Boulevard Conakry is dedicated to him.
