Presentation

A body questions the memory of an art form that shaped its relationship to the world. The acrobats' movements are strange and powerful and they draw their vocabulary from an inherited tradition. This is an exploration of the contradictions of a world torn between the sacred and the profane, the spectacular and the invisible. In the momentum of the performance, music is born, made up of recited poems, cries, songs, and percussions. In a liberating outburst, with humor never far, each performer expresses his satisfaction at having been able to use their art to break through the limits of geography, culture, gender, and class.

“Poetry and the fantasy of situations, the talent and the complicity of the acrobats, and the beauty of the traditional songs are a few of the delightful aspects of this group of artists who have been touring around the world for over ten years." – Le Figaroscope

The Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger places popular culture at the heart of its projects. It is a militant and democratic creative culture that is accessible to all. Questioning, conserving, and promoting Moroccan acrobatics are the company's priorities. Its creative process uses ongoing research dedicated to the links between ancestral art and contemporary creation, as well as with a territory and its population. Because gesture doesn't come without voice and the energy of a movement's is drawn from the choir's breath, the acrobats accompany their performance with singing and music.

"Moroccan acrobatics are a gem, not merely a spectacular activity, but a way of life," says Aurélien Bory. Born out of a warrior tradition, these acrobatics are more a circus art than a piece of theater, combining human pyramids, wheels, and leaps. Characterized by the double dialectics of tradition and contemporary creation, Morocco (in Africa) and France (in Europe), the Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger confronts the extraordinary subjects of the modern world and is inspired by the most innovative contemporary circus research in France.
