Already renowned for having introduced equestrian vaulting to the circus tent, the Pagnozoo company opened new artistic horizons after a chance meeting with the stage director Anne-Laure Liégeois. The circus artists also became actors and their creations took on vibrant new dimensions. A prime example of this artistic complexity is J’accrocherai sur mon front un as de cœur [I Will Pin an Ace of Hearts to my Forehead] where the acoustic effects flesh out the performance and the dramatic narrative enrich the visual enjoyment. The sawdust performance space features five artists and ten horses, while four musicians provide a tango soundscape. Whether at a trot, a canter, or a gallop, they take us on a journey into a nostalgic form of circus, an atmosphere that is suddenly electrified by the arrival of the Stranger. With its magnetic characters and acrobatic prowess, this pure vaulting performance evokes tenderness and the welcoming and acceptance of the Other.

Founded in 1983 during a period when circus and streets arts were going through a major evolution, the Pagnozoo company quickly began focusing on equestrian circus. Today, the company features a touring cast of 14 people and 18 horses and has its own equipped tent with seating for 400 people. In 2000, Pagnozoo worked with the gypsy music group Les Yeux Noirs to create the show Sabots de Lune [Moon Hooves]. The company then created a series of other shows including the more intimate La Maison des Fous [The House of the Crazed] in 2005, Les Nouvelles Histoires [The New Stories] in 2007 and then Emmène-moi [Take Me] in 2010. In 2015, using a new four-mast tent, the performance Boléro drew parallels between the art of Hieronymus Bosch and the intrinsic sensuality of the renowned ballet Béjart. At the same time, the company created L’Ombre du Zèbre [The Shadow of the Zebra], the first equestrian work that was written specifically for young audiences.
