In Le fil Rouge [The Red String], Pamela Pantoja returns to her home country Chile, where the earth often trembles. This is not a trivial matter: it opens up an abyss, it changes the character of those who experience it. One never gets used to the trembling earth. It always affects you: it renders you breathless, it leaves your heart beating so fast it feels like it may leave your chest. Your senses are on high alert to prepare you to face the imminent danger, beads of cold sweat crawl down your spine…

In Chile it is not an earthquake that came to disrupt daily life, but a tsunami, an erupting volcano, a landslide, a forest fire, a bloody dictatorship. In Chile, writes Pantoja, you never feel safe. And that causes trembling of its own. In this work, she decided to scratch at this disturbing past and recognize that it isn’t easy to come into the world during a dictatorship and to carry inside you the silent legacy of its accumulated acts of violence. Her own flesh became the place where these tensions and paradoxes were acted out, her hair became a concrete connection to the past she is trying to understand. As for the circus and the theater, they are here to stop her from collapsing beneath the weight of her anger.
