Presentation

Minuit is a project that was conceived by a circus artist for a theater; a set that reinvents itself every time, depending on the stage. The apparatuses are arranged differently depending on the empty spaces that are left between them. The freedom of movement offered by this performance area is the cornerstone of the writing. From there emerges a grappling between the device and the body. These set designs, these apparatuses, these machines, these objects, this relationship to time, to the public, to the image... they all ultimately serve in the quest for one thing: suspension. The furtive moment when the object thrown through the air or the body in flight reaches the summit of the parabola, just before the fall.

“Dizzying and sometimes staggering, the show roams on towards the dream. As in suspension, the artists lure us for an hour into an elsewhere where the body becomes as light as a feather." – Rhinocéros

“It's light, aerial, poetic, and funny." – Libération

A graduate of the CNAC in Châlons-en-Champagne and the CNDC in Angers, Yoann Bourgeois initially performed as a permanent artist in Maguy Marin's company CNC in Rillieux-la-Pape. In 2010, he began his own process of creation. Accompanied by Marie Fonte, he launched the Atelier du Joueur, a nomadic performance resource center that was the foundation of what would become the Compagnie Yoann Bourgeois. With his accomplices, he settled in Grenoble, where he worked to deepen the links between simulation games and vertigo.

A first cycle of creation revolving around great musical works focused on the "figure" and its proximity to the "motif" – a new kind of circus script that emancipated itself from the "spectacular": Les Fugues (2010), L’Art de la Fugue (2011), and Wu-Wei (2012).

In 2014, a second cycle of creation saw the radicalization of the artistic gesture through a more profound sense of dramaturgy. This resulted in Celui qui Tombe, a unique piece of writing that affirmed the body/strength relationship as a narrative source. The constellation of these projects reveals a fascination with the point of suspension. A carte blanche offered by the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris encouraged the creation of new projects which led to shows such as Minuit, Tentatives d’Approches d’un Point de Suspension. Yoann Bourgeois and Rachid Ouramdane have been co-directors of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Grenoble since January 1, 2016.
