Presentation

Like a swarm of birds, 19 acrobats from the Compagnie XY explore the boundaries of the acrobatic arts and find their inspiration in natural phenomena such as murmurations. This form of communication is most evident in the flights of starlings: a ballet of hundreds of birds in a cloud that is so finely tuned and so dense that it eclipses the sun for an instant...

With this new creation, Compagnie XY seeks to inscribe acrobatic movement into a continuity, a continuum, which permits the reversal and turnaround of situations without there being any clash or friction. The artists evolve in a sensitive landscape that no longer opposes nature and culture or body and mind. A playground open to the four winds.

This is the approach that the choreographer Rachid Ouramdane embraced when he entered this collaboration. By fostering existing resonances, he was able to offer his words, gestures, and vision to the collective.

A true ode to life, Möbius refers us to the absolute necessity of "doing together" as the basis of all forms of subsistence, perpetuation, and invention.

The result is guaranteed moments of grace and poetry...

"A new page is turning for Company XY, as it does with every one of their projects. More stripped down, very choreographic, this creation offers new and generous outlets to their acrobatic language, all under the guidance of Rachid Ouramdane, who handles the graceful movements as well as the collapses."

– La Terrasse

"The Collective XY is breathing fresh air into the art of the circus. Möbius is made in their image, infinitely beautiful."

– Les Echos

For close to 15 years, the Compagnie XY has been questioning acrobatic language through the innovative practice of lifts. While relying on the fundamentals of this circus technique, the artists of the collective play with codes, rhythms, and forms as a way to place acrobatics back at the center of the artistic gesture.

As part of this process, the company has chosen to work in large numbers to multiply the creative possibilities and broaden its field of research. This choice also corresponds to an artistic approach that wants to question the concepts of mass and crowds and their interactions in the same space-time. Beyond this, it is also a manner of questioning the relationship of the individual to a group or within a given social environment.

Möbius is the fifth creation of Compagnie XY after Les Voyages (2018), Il n'est pas encore minuit... (2014), Le Grand C (2009), and Laissez-Porter (2005). The success of these previous shows – more than 900 performances worldwide – has thus opened the path to genuine research into physical language and the universes it can compose for audiences.
