Presentation

As one of three opuses dealing with the human condition, this solo performed on a pole explores the themes of escape, flight, the need for solitude, and fear of society. The central character can only be at one with themself within an imaginary canopy that keeps the heaviness and violence of the world at bay. Unfolding between dream and reality with a constant back and forth between the world above and the world below, the show reflects the refusal to face one's fears; the pole, the only link between two universes, becomes the ultimate refuge. Nous ne sommes pas des oiseaux - Opus 1 [We Aren't Birds – Opus 1] is a revival of Tête en l'air, a solo recreated in 1998 and inspired by Sylvie Guillermin's first solo, L'Île aux Vents, in 1988.

Biography

Sylvie Guillermin created her company in Grenoble in 1988. She sculpts her dance down to the finest detail as a means of questioning the human condition. The poetic universe she weaves is enriched through collaboration with circus artists, painters, actors, musicians, and visual artists.
