Presentation

Minuit is a project created by a circus artist for the theater. This nuance is important because here the notion of theatricality is treated in the most material way. In the words of the artist, playing with theater means, “It is important that there be emptiness between the equipment and that the stage be filled in a diverse manner, because this layout provides the possibility for creation... These spaces reveal the theater itself is our primary piece of equipment.”

The notion of play is a focus of the work done by Yoann Bourgeois. He likes, “integrating, building, or reconstructing the physical devices that allow him to amplify a particular power relationship, a non-manipulation, which constrains the actor and deceives him. Meaning emerges from this struggle, from this hand-to-hand combat and the individual. These devices share an ability to render perceptible a point of suspension. The point of suspension is a juggling expression for the furtive moment where an object that has been thrown in the air reaches to summit of the parabola, just before the fall.” The artist shares his search of the point of suspension through dreams of the body as feather, of the poetic infinite, of fragility, and of the beauty of music. A dizzying experience!

Yoann Bourgeois is an acrobat, actor, juggler, and dancer who has codirected the CCN2 in Grenoble with Rachid Ouramdane since 2016. He also works with the BNP Paribas foundation to develop their projects.

Bourgeois discovered balancing acts while at the Cirque Plume school. He is a graduate of the Centre National des Arts du Cirque, which he attended while also attending the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine. During this time he collaborated with Alexandre Del Perrugia and Kitsou Dubois. He later became a permanent artist with the Centre Chorégraphique National de Rillieux-la-Pape and with the Maguy Marin company.

In 2010, he launched his own creative process. With Marie Fonte and other partners, he initiated the Atelier du Joueur, which laid the foundation for his company. His first creation was Cavale, followed by a cycle inspired by great musical pieces: Les fuguesL’Art de la fugue, and Wu-Wei. That same year, the company inaugurated the Centre International de Recherches Circassiennes, which aims to create a genealogy of the acrobatic gesture. A second cycle of creations began in 2014, with Celui qui tombe and Minuit.

Bourgeois has since continued his research into equipment and devices that amplify physical phenomena, and he uses this work to foster creations in multiple disciplines: opera, film, music videos, concerts, theater, circus…
