The 14:20 company, which started the Magie Nouvelle [New Magic] movement, offers a ballet performance in which the real and the unreal collide, and life and death are at play. Wade in the Water features a visual, aesthetic, and musical force that strikes both the eyes and the ears. With an original composition by Imbrahim Maalouf, the show disorients the senses and propels AragoRn Boulanger, the author of this surreal and tortured choreography, between the enigmatic grace of abandonment and the necessity of resistance. The company masterfully evokes a magical and archaic feeling.
The performance explores the strange conditions when magic renders boundaries meaningless while addressing the universal theme of the internal journey and the symbolic pathways open to those people that experience loss (of oneself, of another). Wade in the Water is an odyssey that questions the audience's illusions while taking them through one person's emotional states and physical vertigo How does one react when momentous news is announced? When death places the individual on the path of self-bereavement, when collective dramas infuse our reality, when they submerge it. Wade in the Water borrows its title from a well-known spiritual sung by North America slaves…

“A poetic miracle. Some of the scenes are stupefying in their beauty.” Le Figaro, Armelle Héliot, 9 May 2018
"Wade in The Water plunges its audience into a surreal atmosphere. AragoRn Boulanger floats in the air, as do the objects surrounding him. Fascinating.” Le Parisien, Sylvain Merle, 7 May 2018
“A powerful and unsettling show. Playing with light, the shadows, and optical illusions, bodies seems to levitate and create a visual fascination that can only be compared to poetic intensity.” La Terrasse, Isabelle Stibbe, 7 May 2018
“An ever-floating and fragile structure, obsessed with falling and disappearing, this show is very theatrical.” Télérama Sortir, Rosita Boisseau, 2 May 2018
“Under Raphaël Navarro and Clément Debailleul’s tent, the jugglers, magicians, and directors allow new magic to grow and find meaning. The mechanics of illusion and the optical phenomena, the manipulations of the real and the subterfuge regularly evoked by this artistic duo dismantle all of our bearings.” Le Monde, Gilles Renault, December 2016
“But if there is indeed a desire to leave the audience wide-eyed, the show—which is “unclassifiable”by (antiphrastic) definition—also seeks to move forward in theatrical writing (…). Wade in the Water gets its name from a famous Negro spiritual (…). We rejoice at the end of this sensory journey that plays out to the compositions of Ibrahim Maalouf.” Libération, Rosita Boisseau, December 2016
Founded in 2000 by Clément Debailleul and Raphaël Navarro, the 14:20 company has produced about twenty shows, performances, and visual installations: Solo S (2003), Vibrations (2009-2011), Notte (2010), Stormy Weather (2013), Nous, rêveurs définitifs [We, Definitive Dreamers] (2016), Wade in the Water (2016), and Faust (2018) at the Comédie Française.
The company runs La Boîte Noire, a laboratory for magical experimentation dedicated to research, innovation, training, and resources at the CNAC. For the past twelve years, it has offered professional training courses at this site. It also oversees courses in Magie Nouvelle at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre (ENSATT) and the École Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette (ESNAM). The company has participated in a variety of diverse collaborations and multidisciplinary encounters with Michel Butor, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Philippe Decouflé, Cirque du Soleil, Laurence Equilbey...
The creators of 14:20 have served as associate artists at the Centquatre-Paris since 2012 and have recently been named associate artists at the Théâtre du Rond-Point.
