Presentation

The seven artists who make up Mad in Finland have three things in common: they are all women, they are all circus performers, and they all left their lives in Finland behind to follow their passion for the circus. From this common foundation was born the desire to question identity with the perspective allowed by geographical distance, all the while leaving space for the nostalgia, the dreams, and the fantasies that can be sparked by a country one has left.

Within the context of the rise of the extreme right everywhere in Europe and particularly in Finland, the question of identity is not trivial. What does it mean to be Finnish? What does it mean to be a foreigner? Can one feel Finnish while living outside the country? How does one continue to experience one’s language and culture when one is living in France, in Spain, or in another country?

With lots of humor, love, and energy, the seven women of Mad in Finland offer a piece of the country as they see it or dream of it. A reinvented and imaginary Finland, where “Finnish depression” holds something magical, where the harshness of the climate builds strong character.

The show also speaks of the circus, because engaging in the circus is a life choice for most of the artists, one that includes touring, the big top, and numbers and techniques pushed to the highest level.

"Between nostalgia, love of tradition, and humour, our Finnish women— trapezist, funambulist or acrobat—put on a real show and send Nordic cliches flying. (…) The women of Mad in Finland, we’re already mad about them."  Le Monde, Rosita Boisseau, December 2014

“The female septet beats as one heart, jubilant, incandescent, and airborne whilst defying the laws of gravity, perspiring profusely with the joy of acting together.” Stradda, Christiane Dampné, July 2014

“Welcome to the Finland of the seven strong-willed women of Mad in Finland who don’t hesitate to come to grips with the widespread clichés abouth their country in a performance that combines tradition and originality in a cabaret atmosphere. We aren't bored for a minute.” Ouest France, Agnès Le Morvan, April 2014

In 2012, as part of the as part of the “Tant qu’il y aura des Mouettes" festival organized by Galapiat Cirque, a carte blanche was given to seven Finnish women who worked in the circus arts. Thus was born MAD IN FINLAND, a project that features a group of old friends and circus school classmates who continue to collaborate on new creations in spite of their wide-ranging personal projects.

Galapiat? What's that?!

Galapiat [galapja] n. m. from old French : a rascal, a hobo, a scallywag

Galapiat Cirque supports, creates and produces shows, events and generates social ties.

Galapiat Cirque, consists of multiple itineraries, new productions, all sorts of different projects and a local anchorage in Brittany that is becoming stronger and stronger.

Galapiat Cirque Cirque is a General interest co-operative (SCIC) of about 50 members, artists, back office, technicians, friends, local authorities and partners.

Galapiat Cirque aims at bringing culture to other territories by reinventing the means of getting there. "Go where Circus does not often go". Our goal is to connect different audiences, generations, sectors of activity around a show or a project...

We are convinced that circus is a popular and federative art form, an exceptional medium for generating social change and personal transformation.
