Presentation

Le Nouveau Monde is a meditation on the early 21st century. When did it truly begin: In November 1989, with the fall of the Berlin wall? In 1992-94, with the birth of the Internet? On September 11, 2001? In 2007, with the signature of the Kyoto protocol? In considering the unknown, we have neither history nor philosophy nor science, only the poetry of a show, the naiveté of the circus, and Gilles Cailleau’s performance. All of this is combined to create his exploration and questioning of the world that is to come. It is a show that ascends both the Tower of Babel and the Twin Towers and has been constructed in a manner that is accessible to both young and old audiences…

We are with him, we are amongst ourselves, both everywhere and nowhere. He is a virtuoso when it comes to theater, manipulation of objects, and knife throwing. We become one with him in this jumble of materials from the past and the present, made of plastic, scrap iron, wood, glass, explosives… There is an acrid smell and the ground seems like a highway service area: there are puppets, a child with a crown, and Playmobil toys that philosophize.

This show's final secret is that is starts with a solo and ends in an ensemble: each individual is welcome to give a little bit of themselves.

“Funny and heartbreaking.” La Terrasse

“The circus of the century! Filled with an epic breath." Gilles Cailleau

embodies a poetry and a narration that are very singular in the circus landscape today. Also a great joy.” Politis

“Gilles Cailleau sweats, he is an acrobats, a musician, he is terribly emotional. He lives the seasons; those of the thunder, of pain, of worry, but also of dreams. (…) We were truly moved!” Le Monde

“An exceptional moment, unclassifiable, where time seems to stop.” La Revue du Spectacle

Attention Fragile was created in 1999 to address two major questions: How can we perform among people instead of in front of them? And how can the actor-audience relationship become the foundation of artistic creation? Since then, the company has been traveling in France and abroad, offering a type of show that is tenderly vibrant and made up of subtle asides and stolen secrets. The show is performed in all sorts of places, from the most renowned venues to the most miniscule clubs. Nearly every year, Attention Fragile sets up a “big top village”, a space for living, for encounters, and for performances. The traveling that is inscribed in the company’s DNA is more about the fragility of the coming world than it is about the traditions of circus or theater. Having started in the world of the theater and having been attracted to the world of circus, Gilles Cailleau has written or directed such performances as Tout l’Univers en plus petit, Gilles & Bérénice, Le Tour complet du cœur, Tania’s Paradise, Fournaise, Le cabaret perdu… Since 2017, he has been an official associate artist at the Théâtres en Dracénie in Draguignan.
