Presentation

This is a conference on laughter. A conference on laughter presented by Proserpine, a grotesque clown, a universal character, and the subject of her own research for this occasion. This is a conference about living. A reflective and practical experiment on laughter. Proserpine, through a series of experimentations between herself and the audience and the use of theoretical texts, will offer a corporeal experience of the irrepressible event that is laughter. In so doing, she will seek to understand its extraordinary powers on the social body. Understanding the singular act that is laughter is one thing; putting one's finger on it is a whole different matter. This is what Proserpine will seek to do with and for you.

"[Caroline Obin] conducts unusual artistic projects and is concerned with the presence clowns can create and how they can shake things up in our day-to-day lives. [...] These interventions allow her to weave threads between life and dreams with multiple audiences." – Furies 2015

Over the past 17 years, the Apprentie Compagnie has been experimenting with original artistic devices, primarily through the character of Proserpine. This practice has allowed Caroline Obin, circus artist, to develop her artistic process all the while adopting the position of observer in relation to society. Working on the place of the imaginary in the day-to-day life, she advocates a peculiar creative process, setting up original artistic experiments that result in rich material and create an innovative place in the secret gardens of the audiences that come to meet her.

Among the many devices introduced by Caroline Obin, the character of Proserpine is literally offered to the public: incorporated into the real world, the character ends up belonging to the public. This strange link unites everyone in the space, but the link also unites the threads of the rational and the irrational, fiction and reality, within the "spectator". Trained at the CNAC in Châlons, Obin created the character of Proserpine with Catherine Germain and François Cervantès. Since 2013, she has been doing a Masters in Visual Arts – Creation, Theory, Meditation at the Université Jean Jaurès in Toulouse. Along with Christine Buignet, she is researching Proserpine and the clown in contemporary art.
