Inspired by the traditional documentary form, Yohanne Lamoulère captures the streets of Marseille and follows the traces left by the city's transformations. Passionate about the living and the body as they present themselves in her daily life, she met Raquel Rache de Andrade, the co-director of the Biennale who also happens to be her neighbor, about ten years ago. What began as a working relationship soon turned into a more profound bond, with two sets of eyes pointed toward one subject: that of the body. In each of her photos, Yohanne Lamoulère frames the humanity that is held in the silhouette of the circus artist. This evocative long-term project that was born out of a chance encounter a decade ago is presented at the second edition of the Biennale.
Yohanne Lamoulère has been photographing Marseille since 2009. She tells the story of the city through the lens of her Rolleiflex, capturing its mutations and street life. Her photographs express her obsession with certain subjects: youth, neighborhoods, social determinism and the capacity of some to escape it – all of which is largely inspired by the documentary tradition. She has often stuck to the north side of the town and her work today offers a certain sense of utopia.
