Presentation

When we float, what do we hold on to? If I see the world from above, will I get dizzy? If I dive inside myself, will I fall? For her first creation for young audiences, Kitsou Dubois shares her passion for weightlessness and explores questions that evoke the body in suspension. With a backdrop of spectacular images taken while in a zero gravity room, the performance's dance and aerial acrobatics incorporate such fragile, graceful, and precise movements that space and time are suspended. Between the air (R – as in the French "air") and the water (O – as in "eau"), if the body is free to move without falling, where will it go?

Kitsou Dubois has always taken dance beyond the stage. After a stay at NASA in 1990, she carried out her first parabolic flight with the CNES, which allowed her to experience a few minutes of total weightlessness. This episode became the foundation of her choreographic work, which also saw a shift toward microgravity. In 1990, she received a doctorate in aesthetics, sciences, and technologies of the arts from the Université Paris 8 with a thesis on the perception of movement in weightlessness. Over the next two years, while in residence with the arts/science agency "Arts Catalyst", she carried out a parabolic flight with the Russian Space Research Institute; she has conducted twenty more such flights since then.

Her choreographic work seizes the phenomenon of weightlessness in order to explore movement, perception of the environment, sensations of time, relationship to matter... Kitsou Dubois immerses her performers in places where gravity is altered – in water, in flight, or in virtual reality settings – and explores other artistic forms, such as the image, the circus or the visual arts. Between the loss of bearings and the absences of points of anchor, Kitsou Dubois creates dreamy pieces that blur the viewer's perceptions.
